Name: Smithsonite

Smithsonite is a zinc carbonate, a sedimentary mineral that occurs in the oxidation zone of sulfur rich lead or zinc or copper deposits. It is often associated with hemimorphite, galena, cerrusite, Azurite, malachite and several other related minerals. Crystals are rare, but the botryoidal or mammillary massive forms of Smithsonite can be quite beautiful and intriguing. It is an allochromatic mineral, which takes its various colors from trace elements present. The blue-green Smithsonite contains copper, the pink or violet has manganese or cobalt, the yellow hue is from cadmium and the brown is from iron. The stone is a zinc ore, and the more colorful forms are sometimes used for ornament, particularly the copper bearing blue-green stone which is sometimes used as a Turquoise imitation. It is named for James Smithson, the founder of the Smithsonian Institution.

It is found in many localities around the world, and several areas produce beautiful specimens. The blue-green examples from the Kelly and Magdelena mines in Socorro County, New Mexico and those from mines in Inyo County, California are some of these. Mexico, Italy, Greece and other sites also have fine specimens.

Metaphysical Properties: Smithsonite has similar spiritual qualities as Chrysocolla and Turquoise, but to a lesser degree and a slightly lower vibration. It is a stone useful to help complete desired goals, and to keep the mind clear and aware and focused on the task at hand. It is a stone for stability and security, and is conducive to aiding relationship issues to bring more comfort and harmony and balance to a home or work place.

It also helps with Chakra activation and alignment, directing primary vital force through the body to enhance physical strength and health. It may also help the intuitive to see or hear psychic messages and have a clearer understanding of them.

It may be used as a "substitute" stone in Chakra grids for healing work, and may lessen immune disorders. It is associated with the planets Mercury and Jupiter, the signs Virgo and Sagittarius and the elements air and fire.

Chakras: Throat, Heart and Spleen.
