Fluorite is calcium fluoride, a mineral that forms in a variety of diverse environments. In hydrothermal veins, it is often associated with lead, zinc or silver ores and found with calcite, barite, galena, sphalerite or other related minerals. Crystals are cubes or octahedron, and it also occurs in massive form. Fluorite's color varies from transparent, white, yellow, and blue to violet, green and sometimes pink.
Banded or zoned Fluorite is particularly beautiful, and is used in carving, jewelry and other polished items. Vases of carved Fluorite were found in ancient Alexandria, and artifacts of Fluorite were found in the ruins of Pompeii. Ornaments of Fluorite were used by early Native Americans and included in Mound burials in the present state of Illinois.

Rosiclaire Lead Mine in Hardin County, Illinois has produced crystals up to one foot across! Cave In Rock, Illinois and Elmwood, Tenn. are sources of beautiful specimens. Durango, Mexico and Hunan Province, China also have lovely fluorides. England and Italy have wonderful Fluorides; Derbyshire’s Blue Jack is one example. Amelia Courthouse, Va. has a rare chlorophane fluorite, which is phosphorescent under low temperatures.

Most fluorite is fluorescent under UV light. The name is from Latin "fluere", "to flow", as the mineral melts easily and is used as a flux in ore smelting. It is used to produce hydrofluoric acid, and fluoride is used in some toothpaste.
