Aquamarine is a beryllium aluminum silicate. It is the blue to blue-green member of the beryl family, which includes Emerald, Golden Heliodor, Morganite and Goshenite. Aquamarine is found in pegmatite rock, often associated with quartz, microcline and Muscovite. Aquamarine means "sea water", and the stone has been believed to protect sailors and ships from misfortune at sea for centuries. It was also thought to bring clairvoyant ability and good health and memory to the wearer. Aquamarine is used in fine and beautiful jewelry, the best quality stones coming from alluvial deposits in Brazil and the Ural Mountains. Beautiful specimens have been found in Pakistan. China, India, Madagascar and the U.S. Have produced desirable Aquamarines. Amelia County, Virginia has wonderful specimens.
