Amethyst is a silicon dioxide, the purple member of the Quartz family, found in pegmatite rocks of igneous origin, and as geodes in alluvial deposits. The violet, lavender and red purple shades are caused by ferric iron in the stone. Sometimes Amethyst may contain a warm golden citrine that creates another mineral, Ametrine, when they are found together. Natural Ametrine has been mined in Brazil and Bolivia, although much is produced by heat treating Amethyst. Amethyst Quartz, which is banded purple and white is also found. Amethyst occurs in many areas worldwide, but Brazil and Uruguay are the two most important commercial sources. In the U.S., beautiful Amethyst specimens have been found in Maine, Virginia, the Carolinas and Georgia. Canada and Mexico also have good specimens, the Vera Cruz, Mexico crystals being most delicate and desirable. Crystal Geodes of Amethyst have formed that are large enough for a person to stand in. Amethyst Cathedrals, as these are called, are sometimes found with stars of white calcite growing upon them, which adds to their beauty.

The name "Amethystos" is Greek for "not intoxicated. The stone was used as an amulet to protect one from drunkenness. It was also believed to drive away evil thoughts and demons. It was used to calm the mind, and to aid spiritual insight. In Medieval times, this gem was highly valued by the clergy.

A stone revered for centuries, Amethyst beads have been found in Egyptian sites dating to 3,500B.C. It was combined with Carnelian, Turquoise or Garnet, and was also carved into amulets bearing animal images. St. Valentine's ring was said to contain Amethyst carved with a Cupid! Now amethyst is faceted, cabochon cut or carved into ornaments. A birthstone for February, it is a gem that everyone loves!
